Crisp to the bite, glistening with freshness, an array of eye-catching bright natural colours – if your produce doesn’t reach the market in this way, it won’t sell. Consumers want a level of convenience and you want to deliver your crop at its fresh best. Packaging for fresh vegetables is complex – there are too many factors to say that this type of plastic or that type of packaging is the right one. There are many different requirements and we have them all covered.
- Variety. There is no “one size fits all” strategy for fresh vegetables. Once cut; some produce requires a certain level of oxygen transmission to maintain freshness and keep it looking clean and crisp, other types of fresh produce require a completely different approach.
- Display. Many of these products will also be packed on a tray or other presentation medium. We must consider how the product will be displayed when developing a packaging solution.
- Visibility and print. The correct combination of a good print surface but one that offers high quality optics, is fundamental.
The key to success is providing the right amount of oxygen to suit the produce, using the correct combination of barriers.
Additional technology is required for the inside of veggie packaging, this is product specific and we know our onions, if you’ll excuse the veggie humour.
BOPP delivers excellent see-through and printability, perfect for many leafy veggie bags.
LDPE is often used for root vegetables where the weight and the rough edges of some our New Zealand produce could damage a lesser film.
Other products will require EVA polymers to keep packaging sealed whilst maintaining quality optics and freshness.
